Dear Councillor,
 
I live in your ward. I support my family by working as a Toronto Police Services cleaner.

It’s come to my attention that the City is looking to eliminate my job by contracting it out. If this happens, it will have a terrible impact on my family.  Toronto Police facilities will also suffer with less security and inadequate cleaning.

I understand the decision is going to something called the Bid Committee and is not being discussed by council. How can this happen when the impacts on workers and police is so large?
 
Let me tell you some of the things I do. Working at a police station means I regularly clean out cells that may be infected with Scabies, bed bugs, Hep B and C and live tuberculosis. I have to clean up human waste, blood and vomit. 
 
I also work in direct contact with our police officers. They know me and know that they can trust me working in high security areas. Police stations are 24/7 operations with jail cells and people often behaving badly. For-profit cleaning services pay little more than minimum wage resulting in a high turnover of staff. This will result in serious security issues for officers, civilian staff and the community. We already know that in other police jurisdictions and at our airports and ports organized crime targets these kinds of facilities.
 
These are hard economic times and I need this job. Toronto is an expensive city and we need jobs that pay a decent wage for hard work. Putting me out of work and paying poverty level wages to someone to do my job is wrong.
 
Please let me know if you will use your position and voice to make sure that the decision to eliminate my job is discussed by council and not done in the dark without any transparency by the Bid Committee.
