Black History Month Celebration

10 February 2020

On Friday, February 28, 2020, Local 79 held its annual Black History Month celebration.

We were joined by Olivia Nuamah, former executive director of both Pride Toronto and the Atkinson Foundation, who discussed her experience as a black woman in leadership roles and the negotiation of identity in the context of race and gender.

We also welcomed Greg Birkett, an award-winning poet, writer, teacher and playwright who gave a moving spoken-word performance with his daughter.

There were also vocal performances, African drumming and dancing, and lots of great food. A big thank you to Local 79 Equity Vice-President Avaline Miller and the Human Rights Committee for organizing such a great event!
