Congratulations to New Federal NDP Leader

The following is a letter of congratulations to the Honourable Thomas Mulcair, Leader of the New Democratic Party and Leader of the Official Opposition.

April 4, 2012

The Honourable Thomas Mulcair, M.P.
Leader of the New Democratic Party
Leader of the Official Opposition
House of Commons
Ottawa, Ontario
K1A 0A6

Dear Mr. Mulcair,

On behalf of CUPE Local 79, I wish to congratulate you on your recent successful bid to become the new leader of the Federal NDP.

CUPE Local 79 represents approximately 20,000 workers at the City of Toronto, the Toronto Community Housing Corporation (TCHC) and Bridgepoint Hospital. Our members make sure Toronto’s drinking water is safe and that our city’s restaurants are clean; take care of seniors and children; ensure that buildings are built properly and that they are safe; provide employment and social services for those who need them; keep new mothers and their babies healthy; and nurture communities through education and recreation programs.

It is vitally important that all Canadian municipalities receive sufficient Federal funds in order to provide highly regarded and much needed services to their residents. The late Jack Layton, former Federal NDP Leader and Leader of the Official Opposition, was a champion of sustainability for municipalities. In the early 2000s, Ottawa earmarked federal funds for municipal environmental initiatives as a result of Jack’s pioneering work.

As the new Federal NDP Leader, you have a unique opportunity to influence the current Federal government and hold them accountable to advance municipal ideals for sustainable cities. CUPE Local 79 is confident that you will continue to protect our valued municipal public services and public health care as the Leader of the Official Opposition, and we send you our best wishes for your new role in Ottawa.

Sincerely,

Tim Maguire
President
