Ice Storm 2013

30 December 2013

Thank-you Local 79 members.  You always Take Care of Toronto, but in the last week you have really stepped up.

Toronto needs you, and as the City digs out from this extreme ice storm, you are there providing services.  In the last week you have been a lifeline for the residents of Toronto.  In the midst of widespread blackouts and freezing temperatures, residents turned to you for desperately needed emergency services.  Local 79 members can be found in almost every Division, and your work, alongside our brothers and sisters in CUPE Local 416 and CUPE Local 1 Toronto Hydro, has been above and beyond the call of duty – 24/7.

Many of our members have been without power at home, including some members of the Local 79 Executive.  A big thank-you to all the families and neighbours across the City who opened their homes to provide a warm, safe place for residents stranded by the storm: none of us will soon forget the generosity of spirit shown during this time, so please share your ice storm stories with us.  Let us know who you helped and who helped you — on the job and in your neighbourhood.

Your commitment to service has made all the difference in the aftermath of this severe storm.  Thank-you Local 79 members, you make us proud.

In solidarity,

Tim Maguire
President, Local 79
