Join Local 79 in supporting the United Way

Dear Local 79 Sisters and Brothers,

Local 79 members working with the many diverse communities that make our city so vibrant and unique, know how important the United Way is to residents of Toronto. United Way Toronto is the only major funding organization that delivers significant core operating support to social service agencies. These community organizations, that our members regularly deal with, provide vital social services to hundreds of thousands of people throughout the city—single parents, abused women, young children and teenagers, the elderly, the physically challenged, the homeless, and new immigrants. Local 79 and United Way Toronto share the goal of making the community a healthy place to live, work and raise a family.

The United Way Toronto launches its yearly campaign today, September 6th. Local 79 Treasurer, Lily Chang will be in attendance as a newly elected member of their Board of Trustees.

Local 79 is so proud of all of our members who have made significant contributions, financially and with displays of talent and creativity, which have resulted in the City of Toronto being the recipient of a number of the United Way of Canada’s “Thanks a Million Awards”. These awards are bestowed yearly on organizations and affiliated unions who have each contributed $1,000,000 or more to the United Way.

The Labour Movement was built on the principle of people helping people, and Local 79’s continued participation and support for United Way Toronto provides an avenue for our members to continue this worthy tradition.

In these difficult times, it is especially important that Local 79 members at the City, TCHC and Bridgepoint Hospital continue to support all of the workplace campaigns that are being held to raise funds for United Way Toronto.

Beginning this year, Local 79 is organizing a number of events of our own in support of United Way Toronto. Local 79 will be launching our new “Local 79 in Toronto Communities Fund” at our Annual Golf Tournament, on September 19th, and will donate a portion of funds raised to United Way Toronto. In October, Local 79 is sponsoring the CN Tower climb for United Way Toronto.

Have fun at all these events while supporting a truly worthy cause!

In Solidarity,

Tim Maguire
President
