Labour Council: 150 years of working for justice

This year – 2021 – marks the 150th anniversary of the Toronto & York Region Labour Council, of which CUPE Local 79 is a proud and active member.

For a century and a half working people have organized collectively within Labour Council with a vision towards economic and social justice.

Happy Holidays from CUPE Local 79! As we celebrate the festive season, including Hanukkah and Christmas that begin on the same day this year, we wish everyone a peaceful and joyful holiday season. Let’s celebrate the coming together that make us strong.
As we celebrate the winter solstice and Yalda night, we reflect on the solidarity we’ve been building this year. This season reminds us of the power of connection, reflection, and the warmth of community. Wishing everyone light, strength, and peace in the days ahead.
CUPE Local 79 continues to stand in solidarity and show up to Canadian Union of Postal Workers (@cupwsttp ) strike lines, as CUPW members face an unacceptable attack on their fundamental rights. The federal government’s decision to impose back-to-work legislation undermines workers’ constitutional right to strike and the collective bargaining process. Postal workers are fighting for critical issues, including fair wages, workplace safety, and equality for all employees. These demands are not just reasonable—they are necessary for ensuring workplace dignity and equity. CUPE Local 79 calls on the federal government to respect the democratic rights of workers. Labour rights are human rights, and any attack on one union is an attack on us all.
Today, we stood together with workers at Carefree Lodge, a City-operated long-term care home, who are demanding better working conditions, respect, and fair treatment. Joined by our allies from OPSEU, Labour Council, ATU 113, and others in the labour movement, we sent a powerful message to management: everyone deserves safe workplaces and the dignity of being heard.

We worked with the Toronto Star to highlight the fact that despite Toronto’s Board of Health voting in September to protect these jobs, the positions of 33 harm reduction workers at The Works will have their positions deleted. CUPE Local 79 President Nas Yadollahi is calling on the City of Toronto to rescind these notices and redeploy affected workers: “These workers have provided life-saving services for decades. To the City, we say: show leadership, advocate for harm reduction, and let these workers keep their jobs.” The Works, a supervised consumption site operated by Toronto Public Health since 1989, is now in jeopardy as Ford’s harmful policy cuts critical services, putting lives at risk.
Today marked the first day at the negotiating table for CUPE Local 79’s bargaining team and the City of Toronto. Members came out to the Sheraton Centre Toronto before bargaining began, standing shoulder to shoulder in a show of unity. The City has saved money on the backs of workers and at the expense of the services Toronto residents rely on. Our proposals are designed to reverse this trend, address the City’s recruitment and retention crisis, and ensure that Toronto remains a city of excellence.
On December 6, 1989, 14 young women at Polytechnique Montréal were murdered in an act of violent misogyny that shook our country and led Parliament to designate December 6 as The National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. We are raising the alarm over disturbing interrogation tactics used in workplace investigations. We worked with @torontotoday.ca to highlight how former police officers employed by the City are conducting aggressive police-style interviews that leave workers feeling intimidated and traumatized. Workers have reported being subjected to hours-long interrogations where investigators yelled, tossed papers, and repeatedly questioned in a guilt-presumptive manner. CUPE Local 79 President Nas Yadollahi says the union is pressing for changes, including legal representation during these interviews, to protect workers from harm. These practices are not just inappropriate—they undermine the City’s commitment to trauma-informed approaches in workplace investigations.
