Local 79 joins allies to launch TorontoCanDoBetter.ca campaign
Toronto’s public services help build better lives, but they are under threat.
We are joining other workers and community allies to fight against cuts to services and the elimination of hundreds of frontline staff. We need a long-term solution that supports our services.
Join our Toronto Can Do Better Campaign now by sending an email to the Mayor and your City Councillor.
After 6 years of cuts, our public services aren’t keeping up with our growing city. Now City Council is considering deeper cuts to services in our parks, recreation centres, homeless shelters, public health and long-term care homes. The cuts include eliminating hundreds of staff positions.
The City Manager has been very clear, if these cuts go through, frontline staff will be laid off.
To make matters worse, TTC fares and daycare fees are being increased and funding for social housing repairs is being defered to keep property taxes low. That means those who can afford it least will continue to pay more, for less. That’s not fair.
That’s why we are launching the Toronto Can Do Better Campaign, bringing together 5 CUPE Locals of Toronto workers and a broad coalition of community and non-profit groups.
Join our campaign now to call for a fair and long-term solution to Toronto’s budget needs, one that:
– Maintains public services to match our growing city.
– Makes smart investments in reliable transit, good jobs and affordable housing.
