The Canadian Labour Congress (CLC) gave CUPE Local 79 President Tim Maguire the honour of welcoming more than 350 labour leaders to its one-day summit on Friday, March 22nd.

The CLC’s ‘National Leaders Summit’ was organized to discuss ways of strengthening union members’ ability to advocate for greater fairness for all Canadians.

Maguire dedicated his welcome to explaining how a year of community-engagement activities had made Local 79 a recognized and stronger voice for issues affecting Toronto communities.

“In the last year we’ve formed new relationships with groups across the city, as Local 79 rolled out its ‘Taking Care of Toronto’ public engagement campaign and participated in numerous charity and community events,” said Maguire. “Our community involvement was recognized with two top awards from the United Way Toronto.

Following the Summit, the CLC welcomed 1, 400 delegates to a conference featuring workshops focused on organizing and communications. CUPE Local 79 was well represented. The aim was to equip union members with the ability to engage in the public debate over the governments’ attacks on workers’ rights and the ramping up of austerity plans.
