Rallying in support of Library workers
On Wednesday, March 14th, 2012, Local 79 joined library workers from CUPE Local 4948 in a rally to show solidarity in their goal of reaching a fair negotiated contract with the City of Toronto.
At the rally in front of the Toronto Reference Library, library workers spoke about the City of Toronto’s practice of increasingly shifting its workforce to part-time work: a terrible strategy of trying to save money on the backs of part-time workers, who receive fewer benefits and are forced to take on other jobs in order to make a decent wage — a reality part-time workers at CUPE Local 79 are all too familiar with. Fifty percent of library workers are now part-timers.
