The fight for $15 has been won
After mounting pressure from labour and community groups, the Ontario Liberals finally responded by announcing they’d raise the minimum wage to $15 over the next 18 months. Local 79 has worked alongside groups like Fight for $15 & Fairness, CUPE Ontario, the Toronto and York Region Labour Council and the Ontario Federation of Labour to achieve this significant change, which will raise the incomes of 30% of working Ontarians and brings them closer to a liveable wage.
A big thank you to the Local 79 activists who made this campaign a success (some of them featured in the above photo).

While this campaign win is great news, workers also need more stability through predictable scheduling, paid sick leave and other standards. And some of the upcoming changes will take far too long to take effect.
But we know now more than ever what we can achieve through activism. Let’s keep it up!
