A message on the Philippines disaster

13 November 2013

A message from Local 79 President Tim Maguire on the devastation from Super Typhooon Haiyan on the Philippines.

Dear Local 79 Sisters and Brothers:

On behalf of the members of Local 79, I would like to express solidarity and support for all our members who have family and friends suffering from the aftermath of the devastation from Super Typhoon Haiyan, one of the worst storms on record.

In the Philippines, communication channels are not yet re-established to many areas, but current reports indicate as many as 2,500 deaths, with the fear of many more casualties yet to be assessed. International reports tell of children begging for help, holding up signs that read, “Help. We need water, food and medicines.”

Relief efforts are underway and your help is urgently needed! Canadian Labour has a partnership with OXFAM Canada and you can make a donation specifically for Typhoon Haiyan relief, which qualifies for a matching donation from the Canadian government.

The Labour Movement has a strong and proud history of responding to catastrophes such as this which bring such misery and devastation to communities.

Once again, our sympathies go out to every one of our members who has been affected by this terrible event.

In Solidarity,

Tim Maguire
President
