We think people deserve to survive in the city they serve.

As the cost of living has skyrocketed, so has the demand for vital services. From child care to employment support, in overburdened shelters and understaffed clinics, Toronto’s city workers are helping neighbours get by. But support from City Hall is falling far behind. We know this work is worth doing. Here’s what we need to keep doing it.

Livable Wages

Despite rampant inflation and extreme housing costs, City wages have remained stagnant for years. Thousands of us are living below the poverty line. Nearly 12,000 workers make minimum wage. Now Toronto faces a retention crisis in hundreds of critical roles because people can’t afford to work for Canada’s wealthiest, most expensive city.

Safe, Healthy Workplaces

Even in frontline roles serving vulnerable clients, many of our members face unsafe conditions due to crumbling infrastructure and chronic mismanagement, often without access to paid sick days or health benefits. We believe it’s time for the City to take care of the caregivers.

Adequate Staffing

Today, the City of Toronto has 65% more job vacancies than there were in 2019, including more than 400 in Senior Services and Long-Term Care alone. As the City struggles to deliver the services that millions rely on, workers have been pushed beyond the breaking point by unpredictable schedules and unsustainable workloads.

Toronto is worth it.
