The City’s latest Street Needs Assessment revealed over 15,400 people experiencing homelessness — a shocking doubling since 2021. This is a public health emergency. This isn’t news to members of CUPE Local 79, the frontline workers in Toronto’s shelters, Streets to Homes outreach, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Public Health and recreation workers. Every day, our members witness the devastating impacts of Toronto’s worsening housing crisis, where over 100 thousand people currently sit on the waitlist for affordable housing. City workers are doing everything they can — connecting people to shelter, administering life-saving care, and maintaining public housing — but they are stretched beyond capacity. While the City plans to open 20 new shelters across Toronto to meet urgent needs, some City Councillors are trying to block them in their communities. These councillors would stand in the way of desperately needed services and leave people with nowhere to go. Everyone deserves to live in dignity. We are calling on all levels of government to act immediately — to build permanent rent-geared-to-income housing, strengthen rent protections, increase income supports, and invest in frontline health care, mental health, and harm reduction services. Toronto cannot face this emergency alone.
Workers at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital came together at our Local 79 info table this week to kick off our bargaining campaign. Over coffee and donuts, members connected with their organizing team, signed up for bargaining updates, and started organizing for a stronger contract.

That’s a wrap! What an incredible Pride weekend in Toronto! CUPE Local 79 was proud to show up loud and proud at the Trans March, Dyke March, and the Pride Parade. Members brought energy in their celebration of/for 2SLGBTQI+ rights. Pride is protest. Pride is celebration. Pride is community.
Today wraps up an intensive 3-day training for Local 79 members in a City Hall Politics 101 training. Members learned about how decisions at City Hall impact our jobs and communities, and how we can organize to influence those decisions.
This week, a new group of of members stepped up to take on one of the most important roles in our union: becoming union stewards and learning to support coworkers, defend our Collective Agreement, and organizing for fairness in our workplaces!
Here are the members of CUPE Local 79’s bargaining and organizing teams for Toronto Community Housing Corporation and Toronto Seniors Housing Corporation! This team is grounded in their workplaces, bringing first-hand knowledge of the challenges members face. Local 79 is committed to the same transparent and inclusive approach that guided our recent negotiations with the City of Toronto. Every member has a role to play in shaping our demands and strengthening our solidarity. We are counting on all of us to stay engaged, connected, and active — communicating directly with our bargaining team members and workplace organizers. All our voices matter and will shape our fight for fairness.
