The City’s latest Street Needs Assessment revealed over 15,400 people experiencing homelessness — a shocking doubling since 2021. This is a public health emergency. This isn’t news to members of CUPE Local 79, the frontline workers in Toronto’s shelters, Streets to Homes outreach, Toronto Community Housing, Toronto Public Health and recreation workers. Every day, our members witness the devastating impacts of Toronto’s worsening housing crisis, where over 100 thousand people currently sit on the waitlist for affordable housing. City workers are doing everything they can — connecting people to shelter, administering life-saving care, and maintaining public housing — but they are stretched beyond capacity. While the City plans to open 20 new shelters across Toronto to meet urgent needs, some City Councillors are trying to block them in their communities. These councillors would stand in the way of desperately needed services and leave people with nowhere to go. Everyone deserves to live in dignity. We are calling on all levels of government to act immediately — to build permanent rent-geared-to-income housing, strengthen rent protections, increase income supports, and invest in frontline health care, mental health, and harm reduction services. Toronto cannot face this emergency alone.
Workers at Hennick Bridgepoint Hospital came together at our Local 79 info table this week to kick off our bargaining campaign. Over coffee and donuts, members connected with their organizing team, signed up for bargaining updates, and started organizing for a stronger contract.
That’s a wrap! What an incredible Pride weekend in Toronto! CUPE Local 79 was proud to show up loud and proud at the Trans March, Dyke March, and the Pride Parade. Members brought energy in their celebration of/for 2SLGBTQI+ rights. Pride is protest. Pride is celebration. Pride is community.
