Local 79 calls on Ford government to reverse policy that will close supervised consumption sites

28 August 2024

Today, front-line workers from Toronto’s supervised consumption sites, alongside union representatives, held a press conference at Queen’s Park to address the devastating impact of the provincial government’s new policy. This policy, which prohibits Supervised Consumption Sites from operating within 200 meters of schools and child care centers, will force the closure of most of these critical facilities in Toronto.

“Premier Ford’s new policy on Supervised Consumption Sites is a calculated attempt to shut these critical facilities down under the guise of safety,” said Nas Yadollahi, President of CUPE Local 79, representing City of Toronto workers. “This decision will lead to thousands of preventable deaths, force drug use into public spaces, and increase strain on our healthcare system. Public health is about prevention, not just treatment. We see what this government is doing, and we will not be silent.”
