For the first time in Local 79’s history, members came together to vote on who the union endorses for city council. Local 79 members are 32,000 frontline public sector workers across Toronto’s neighbourhoods, and in May, they gathered at the Toronto Workers Summit to build a vision of a Toronto where equity is built into every community through the public services and support residents need to thrive. Every candidate the union endorsed was measured against that vision, and Local 79 members voted to endorse Neethan Shan in Ward 25 (Scarborough—Rouge Park).
